Recycle all that you can

For mixed paper, offices can put in work orders to get the large blue "trash can style" carts. Just call the work order desk at 2-1655 to request special office cleanout bins instead of throwing away all those books and paper.

R4 Recycling can provide your office with two different type of bins

  • A bin for mixed paper and softbound books
  • A bin for hardbound books
  • Hardbound books cannot be placed in mixed paper bins!

These bins will be delivered to you (and picked up) on the day that your regularly scheduled recycling pick-up occurs.

Due to limited availability, you will have the cart for only 2 weeks.

For a switch-out (replacing a full bin) please just call custodial at 2-9053 and we would be happy to come out and replace your full bin with an empty one.

For a final pick-up prior to your two-week deadline, please call and place another work order.

If you are not sure whether something can be recycled, here are two useful guides:

If you have really large volumes to clean out (e.g. a storage unit), please visit Special Services.

Tips For Cleaning Out Offices

How to clean up green
Office Supplies

Reuse

Reuse what you have or help others reuse things you don't want. For example, in a lab, ask your co-workers if they can use your extra supplies.

Try to box and move your small office equipment (staplers, etc.) and office supplies (folders, pens, etc.) to avoid purchasing new ones. Or, ask colleagues in other campus units if they might be interested in having things you don't want.

For surplus property, such as folders, chairs, staplers, phones, etc., visit the Bargain Barn.

Dispose of it safely

It is illegal in the State of California to dispose of electronic waste (small electronics, televisions, microwaves, cordless phones, computers, monitors, etc.) in the trash, so here's what to do with this waste:

  • Put things like CDs, batteries, small electronics like chargers, cell phones, etc., in a multi-bin. See the map for locations.
  • For bigger items like computers, monitors, televisions, contact the Bargain Barn.
  • Visit our E-Waste page for additional electronic waste information.

Keep it confidential

For shredding sensitive documents, the campus has a contract for document destruction with Viking Shred, campus agreement # UCD0801122, which will allow an office to use a departmental purchase order for up to $4,999.99.

Lastly, please do not use the normal recycling bins for cleanouts because this causes overflow.
