Organic Waste

UC Davis' green waste site.

Landscape Waste

Also known as green waste, landscape waste can be used to create mulch. Mulch benefits plant life because it traps moisture and also aids in weed control. UC Davis has its own green waste site, however it is restricted for Grounds and R4 Recycling use only.

Materials accepted include: clean untreated wood, wood scraps, lumber scraps, wooden wire spools, broken pallets, tree trimmings, prunings, cuttings, railroad ties (small volume only, call before delivery), and telephone posts (small volume only, call before delivery).

Materials not accepted include: garbage, painted wood, chemically treated wood (i.e. animal pens, CCA treated wood), metals, hazardous materials, and tires.

Food Waste

Over 3,000 pounds of food waste are placed in a landfill each day at UC Davis. This is along with the hundreds of tons of animal bedding and grounds waste that is being placed in a landfill annually. This is why R4 Recycling took an interest in composting because composting is a way to recycle organic matter that usually finds its way to the dump.

These interesting facts lead to a trial project at the Sodexho-Marriott Tercero Dining Common in an effort to compost the pre-consumer (kitchen) vegetable scraps of the dining common. About 75 pounds of vegetable scraps are collected each day at the D.C., which are then brought out to the UC Davis Student Farms and mixed with used straw from the Dairy Barn and formed into long piles. Composting makes sense since it saves money and landfill space and more importantly, it is environmentally friendly.

Project Compost is a program on the UC Davis campus. For more information, please click here to visit their website or call them at (530) 754-8227.
