What is the difference between cardboard and paperboard?

The Solid Waste Division collects corrugated and layered cardboard from clearly marked tan dumpsters located throughout campus. Please flatten boxes and remove all packing material and place only clean cardboard in the dumpsters. Do not contaminate the bins by placing waxed cardboard, food waste, Styrofoam peanuts, or paper.

Please do not mistake paperboard (on top in the picture below) for cardboard (on the bottom in the picture below). Paperboard is commonly used for snack and cereal boxes and is to be placed in mixed paper bins. (Again, cardboard in cardboard bins; paperboard in mixed paper bins).
