Zero Waste: Frequently Asked QuestionFAQ's
Need help? Call our office!
What is Zero Waste? Zero Waste helps on-campus events reduce the amount of waste they produce and thus reduce the financial burden they place on the university; as it costs the campus money to landfill garbage. Why spend the money and time to organize a Zero Waste event? While Zero Waste materials might be slightly more expensive to event coordinators, they help save the University money and landfill space. With only a small amount of your time, you can reduce your event's carbon footprint and close the loop. Should we use silverware or compostables at events? Although compostable utensils and dishware are eco-friendly and convenient, it still costs resources to make these materials. It is always more environmentally friendly to use reusable materials, so using silverware is preferable. We're not using silverware at our event, what can we use instead of plastic? Zero Waste events use 100% compostable utensils! Unlike plastic utensils, they are made from potato starch and decompose just like food residue. You can buy compostable utensils at Supply Express. How much does it cost? Please see Buying Compostable for more information. What do I do with the compost? There is an additional fee if we collect the compost. The cheapest option is to put the event's compost in an on-campus, yellow compost cart. The only public compost cart can be found at the R4 Office.
