Minibin System: Mrak Hall

Audit Dates: 4/29/2002 - 5/3/2002

Congratulations Mrak Hall! Thanks to everyone who helped reduce the waste stream!

  • Results from a Waste Audit performed in Fall of 2000 showed that Mrak Hall’s waste stream contained over 75% recyclable materials.
  • Mini-bin systems were installed in Mrak Hall shortly thereafter in November of 2000.
  • Results from a Waste Audit performed in Spring of 2002 showed that Mrak Hall’s waste stream contained 48% recyclable materials.
  • That’s a reduction of approximately 30%!

30% is great progress, however if used properly the mini-bin system would reduce paper waste to negligible amounts. Of the materials found in the waste stream over one third, 37.6%, was recyclable mixed paper. This was a missed opportunity to divert approximately 332 pounds of mixed paper from the landfill. Using 332 pounds as a weekly average, Mrak Hall potentially generates over 17,000 pounds of recyclable mixed paper every year. Recycling one ton of paper saves 17 trees. So in one year Mrak Hall could save approximately 150 trees if every week that 332 pounds of paper was recycled instead of thrown out.
