How can I recycle batteries? Batteries can be recycled at multibins or you can request a desktop battery bin for your convenience in the office.

Why should I recycle my batteries? Effective February 9, 2006, California state law prohibits throwing away most consumer electronics, including batteries. These items contain lead, mercury, copper, and other metals that leach into the soil polluting groundwater, streams, and wildlife.

What kinds of batteries can I drop off at the UC Davis multibin?

  • AA
  • AAA
  • AAAA dry-cell alkaline
  • C
  • Ni-Cd (nickel-cadmium) rechargeable batteries
  • D
  • 6-volt
  • 9-volt
  • cell phone batteries

Unfortunately, we do not offer the recycling of car Batteries (Call EH&S 752-1493), motorcycle Batteries, and uninterruptible power supplies.

What is the best choice when buying batteries? Buying rechargeable batteries (Ni-Cd) reduces the amount of wasted batteries because they can be used over and over again. An alternative is non-rechargeable (alkaline, lithium, mercury, etc).
