According to the 2004 Statewide Characterization Study, construction and demolition (C&D) materials account for almost 22 percent of the waste stream in California landfills. Many of these materials can be reused or recycled. R4 Recycling's primary focus of the Construction and Demolition project is to divert waste generated at construction and demolition sites away from the landfill. Waste generated from these sites accounts for roughly 10 - 30% of landfill waste by volume. Furthermore, in the next ten years, UC Davis plans to expand its campus infrastructure to support an additional 5,000 students. This expansion means that recycling materials from both construction and demolition sites is more important than ever. R4 also aimed this program to be able to connect with construction companies in order to show them that the UC Davis campus is really serious about recycling, and that we want the companies to continue recycling even after they complete their project at our campus. At first glance, making room for the sorting of the recyclables may seem a difficult task considering the amount of space that is allotted for construction and demolition projects. However, proper planning will not only allow your company to properly dispose of materials, but will also help you organize your project. This site is designed as a tool to help you more easily manage your recyclables in accordance with section 01738 of university construction contract.
