Composting at UC Davis

Over 3,000 pounds of food waste are placed in the landfill each day at UC Davis. This is along with the hundreds of tons of animal bedding and grounds waste that is being placed in a landfill annually. This is why R4 Recycling took an interest in composting because composting is a way to recycle organic matter that usually finds its ways to the dump.

These interesting facts lead to a trial project at the Sodexho-Marriott Tercero Dining Common in an effort to compost the pre-consumer (kitchen) vegetable scraps of the dining common. About 75 pounds of vegetable scraps are collected each day at the D.C., which are then brought out to the UC Davis Student Farms and mixed with used straw from the Dairy Barn and formed into long piles. Composting makes sense since it saves money and landfill space and more importantly, it is environmentally friendly.
