Reuse

You can reuse canvas bags at the store to save money and the environment!
Acquiring products that have been used or can be reused is another environmentally sound choice as well as a cost saver. The campus tries to reuse various items in its daily operation.

  • Some Styrofoam packing peanuts are reused by Central Stores/Receiving. The rest are collected by the R4 Program at various loading docks at Briggs, Chemistry, Meyer and Wickson Halls. Contact the R4 Program at 752-6970 for more details.
  • Central Stores/Receiving also reuses many corrugated cardboard boxes and wooden pallets in their daily operation.
  • The Bargain Barn is one of the best opportunities on campus to reuse items that may otherwise be thrown away. The Bargain Barn has office furniture, computers, lab equipment, and many other items that are no longer being used by campus departments. Contact the Bargain Barn at 752-2145 for more information.

Here are some things you can do to support the campus Reuse efforts:

  • Purchase and use a reusable coffee mug or cup. For a limited time, the Coffee House and Silo offer a discount on soda to those who provide their own container.
  • Use the unwritten side of paper as scratch paper, or to print rough drafts or e-mails. This small, but valuable, technique saves paper.
  • Reuse inter-campus envelopes for mailing correspondence.
There are many items around the house that normally get used only once and are thrown away or recycled. This is not the case for many plastic and paper products. This is an opportunity to get your whole family involved in coming up with multiple creative uses for "single use" products. One perfect example is the one gallon milk jug. After being properly cleaned, it can be used to store and freeze water. It can also be made into a birdhouse, piggy bank, plant seedling "greenhouse", berry picking basket, litter box shovel, or used as a storage container.
